HOW TO MEASURE THE SIZE OF SURFACES
IF YOU WANT TO TILE, A FLOOR, OR KITCHEN TABLE TOPS,
YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE SIZE OF THE SURFACES TO BE TILED,
BEFORE YOU START,  IN ORDER TO BUY, THE THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF TILES
IF YOU WANT TO PAINT, THE ROOMS OF YOUR HOME,
YOU HAVE TO KNOW, THE SURFACE AREA, OF THE WALLS & CEILINGS
OF EACH ROOM, THAT YOU WANT TO PAINT,  IN ORDER TO BUY,
THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF EACH COLOR, YOU WANT TO USE.
IF YOU WANT TO FIND THE SIZE OF THE SURFACE OF A TABLE, A FLOOR OR A WALL
YOU FIRST MUST MEASURE, BOTH  IT'S SIDES,
AND THEN YOU MULTIPLY,  THE SIZE OF ONE SIDE, BY THE SIZE OF THE OTHER SIDE.
AND THAT GIVES YOU THE SURFACE AREA OF THAT SIZE SURFACE.
WE CAN WRITE THAT,  AS A FORMULA,  IN THIS WAY,   SIDE 1 x SIDE 2 = THE AREA
    1
LET US START, WITH A SQUARE TABLE TOP,
THAT, YOU WANT TO PUT TILES ON LIKE THESE >>>
YOU PLACE THE TAPE MEASURE,  ALONG THE SIDES
AND YOU SEE,  THEY ARE BOTH,  100cm wide.
ONE HUNDRED CENTIMETERS = ONE METER (m)
USING OUR FORMULA FOR THE AREA
                 1m x 1m = 1 SQUARE METER

THE TABLE THAT YOU WANT TO TILE
SQUARE METERS ARE USED AS THE MEASURING UNIT, FOR AREAS,
BECAUSE,  IF YOU MULTIPLY THE SIZE IN THE SMALLER CENTIMETER UNITS,
YOU GET.....100cmx100cm = 10,000 SQUARE CENTIMETERS OF AREA,
JUST FOR THIS SMALL TABLE,.
THE FLOORS & WALLS WOULD HAVE MILLIONS OF SQUARE CENTIMETERS OF SURFACE,
WHICH WOULD LEAD TO SO MANY ERRORS IN THE CALCULATIONS OF THEIR AREAS.
THAT WE  ONLY USE SQUARE METERS TO DESCRIBE THE SIZE OF ALL SURFACES
THAT ARE ONE SQUARE METER OR LARGER.
THEREFORE, YOU TELL THE TILE VENDOR,   I WANT TO BUY, " ONE SQUARE METER OF TILES."
AND NOT,  I WANT TO BUY,  10,000 SQUARE CENTIMETERS OF TILES
THE VENDOR WILL THEN ASK YOU
" WHAT SIZE TILES DO YOU WANT ?
TO FIND THE EXACT SIZE OF SQUARE TILES
YOU SELECTED FOR THE TABLE TOP,
YOU DIVIDE THE 100cms BY 3
WHICH WILL GIVE YOU 33.3cm PER TILE
THAT IS VERY CLOSE TO 32cm WIDE,
WHICH IS A STANDARD SQUARE TILE SIZE,
SINCE, THERE ARE 4 LINES OF CEMENT GROUT,
AROUND & BETWEEN THE TILES, 1 cm WIDE,
YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO CUT ANY TILES.
THE VENDOR WILL THEN ASK YOU, " DO YOU NEED SOME MORTAR OR MASTIC ,
TO FIX THE TILES TO YOUR TABLE TOP ?"  IF YOU DO, YOU WILL NEED, 50 GRAMS PER TILE,
THEN, YOU MUST CALCULATE THE  AMOUNT YOU WANT TO BUY & TELL HIM,
9 TILES x 50 GRAMS OF GROUT PER TILE = 450 GRAMS, LET ME HAVE AN EVEN 500 GRAMS.
AND HE WILL MEASURE THAT QUANTITY OUT OF HIS BAG OF MORTAR FOR YOU,
OR SELL YOU A CONTAINER OF TILE MASTIC WHICH IS A SPECIAL GLUE FOR SETTING TILES.
THAT IS VERY GOOD FOR TILE SETTERS WHO WORK QUICKLY,
BUT NOT RECOMMENDED FOR ANYONE WHO SETS TILE SLOWLY,
SINCE IT HARDENS IN 15 MINUTES TO A SOLID ROCK
THE VENDOR WILL THEN ASK YOU, " DO YOU NEED SOME, WHITE EPOCSI CEMENT GROUT ?"
SINCE YOU NEED 2 GRAMS PER TILE OF WHITE EPOCSI, ALCOHOL & WATER PROOF GROUT
YOU WILL HAVE TO CALCULATE THE AMOUNT YOU WILL NEED IN THIS WAY,
 2 grams x 9 TILES = 18 GRAMS.
THEY MAKE 24 GRAM, 60 GRAM & 2000 GRAM BAGS OF EPOCSI GROUT,    ( EPOCSI = EPOXY )
THE 24 GRAM BAG, WILL BE RIGHT FOR YOU AND THERE WILL BE LITTLE TO NO WASTE.
REVIEW WHAT YOU HAVE STUDIED ALREADY.  WHEN YOU CAN SEE THAT EVERYTHING IS CORRECT
THEN YOU WILL ENJOY, THE NEXT SURPRISING EXPERIENCE,  OF OUR STUDENT TILEMAN
2            THE TABLE CAME OUT SO BEAUTIFUL,
THAT A VENDOR IN THE LOCAL MARKET, ASKS YOU,
TO MAKE A SIMILAR TABLE,  BUT TWO TIMES BIGGER, FOR HIS MARKET STALL.

THE FORMULA FOR THE SURFACE AREA IS,
    SIDE 1 x SIDE 2 = THE AREA
   THIS IS WRITTEN THEN,  1 METER x 2 METERS =  2 SQUARE METERS  OR 1m x 2m = 2 sq.m
THEREFORE, YOU CAN TELL THE TILE VENDOR,  " I NEED 2 SQUARE METERS  OF TILES "
ALL OF THEM TO BE  32cm, SQUARE, BROWN & WHITE TILES, AND TWO, 24 GRAM BAGS  OF
WHITE EPOCSI CEMENT GROUT AND A 1000 GRAM - KILOGRAM  CONTAINER OF MASTIC,
BECAUSE, 18 TILES x 50 GRAMS PER TILE = 900 GRAMS OF MASTIC.
IF THE MARKET DIRECTOR, THEN WANTS YOU, TO TILE THE ENTIRE FLOOR OF THE MARKET.
YOU WILL HAVE TO MEASURE, THE SIZE, OF BOTH THE SIDES, OF THE LOCAL MARKET HALL,
AS SHOWN IN THE DRAWING BELOW.
              AGAIN THE  FORMULA IS,
            SIDE 1 x SIDE 2 = THE AREA
                          THEREFORE,
             7 m x 12m = 84 SQUARE METERS
SINCE THE TILES ARE TO BE 20cm SQUARE
BROWN TILES THAT ARE ONLY .2m  WIDE
YOU WILL HAVE TO CALCULATE  THEIR AREA,
IN ORDER TO KNOW HOW MANY TILES TO BUY
FOR THE ENTIRE MARKET HALL.
        .2m x .2m = .04 SQUARE METERS PER TILE
THE AREA OF THE HALL ÷  BY THE AREA  PER TILE
 =
       84 sq.m ÷ .04 sq.m per TILE  = 2100 TILES
YOU ALREADY KNOW, HOW TO CALCULATE
THE MORTAR REQUIRED FOR THE TILE WORK,
BUT THE 20cm SQUARE TILES ARE DEEPER,
THAN THE 32cm TILES, YOU USED BEFORE.
THE VENDOR SAYS TO YOU, THAT YOU
WILL NEED TO USE MORE THAN 5 GRAMS
OF EPOCSI-CEMENT GROUT PER TILE .
  THE MORTAR & GROUT
  MORTAR: 2100 TILES x 50 gr / TILE = 105,000gr
  105,000grams = 105 KILOGRAMS  or 105 kg and,
105 KILOGRAMS IS 21 - 5 kg BAGS OF MORTAR
  GROUT:  2100 TILES x 5gr / TILE = 10,500gr
  10,500grams = 10.5 KILOGRAMS = 10.5kg
OR 6 - 2kg BAGS OF EPOCSI CEMENT GROUT
HOW TO PREPARE TO PAINT A SMALL HOUSE
WHEN WE WANT TO PAINT THE WALLS OF A ROOM OR A HOUSE,
WE ALSO HAVE TO CALCULATE THE SURFACE AREA, THAT NEEDS TO BE PAINTED.
IT IS BEST TO DRAW A SQUARE OR RECTANGLE ON A LARGE PIECE OF PAPER,
FOR EACH OF THE WALLS THAT ARE TO BE PAINTED, AS SHOWN BELOW.
A LITER OF HEAVY WEIGHT EXTERIOR HOUSE COATING, WILL COVER FIVE SQUARE METERS
THEREFORE,  54 sq.m ÷ 5 sq.m  = 10.8 LITERS OF COATING WILL BE REQUIRED.
THESE CALCULATIONS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE OWNERS OF THE HOMES
WHO CONTRACT WITH PAINTERS OR COATINGS MEN.
VERY OFTEN WHEN TWO COLORS ARE USED,THE SECOND COLOR IS PAINTED,
OVER THE FIRST COLOR, THEREFORE, ALWAYS REMEMBER TO CALCULATE,
THE FIRST COAT COLOR, OVER THE ENTIRE AREA OF THE HOUSE OR ROOM,
AND THE SECOND COLOR AS TWICE THE AREA TO BE COVERED,
BECAUSE BRIGHT COLORS USUALLY REQUIRE TWO TO THREE COATS.
AND THEY OFTEN COST 2- 4 TIMES MORE THAN WHITE OR CREME COLORED PAINTS
WE SUGGEST, YOU TRY TO CALCULATE, THE AREA OF THE WALLS OF YOUR ROOM,
USING THE METHOD SHOWN ABOVE, FOR THE SMALL HOUSE IN AFRICA,
YOU CAN USE THE GRIDED PAPER CALLED GRAPH PAPER,
IF IT IS DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO DRAW RECTANGLES .
THE PEOPLE,  WHO FILL BAGS,BOXES & CANS
WITH MORTARS,GROUTS, PAINTS, COATINGS & THINNERS,
ALSO HAVE TO KNOW, HOW MUCH OF EACH OF THOSE PRODUCTS,
FITS INTO, THE DIFFERENT SIZE CONTAINERS, THAT THEY SELL.
AND EVEN COOKS AND CHEMISTS,
MUST KNOW PRECISELY,  HOW TO SIZE THE POTS, PANS & BOTTLES
TO USE WITH EACH OF THEIR SPECIAL RECIPES
